The Helpline was established in October 1978. The goal then, as now, is to:

  • Provide a telephone service to deal with crisis intervention, support and referral to callers.
  • Provide information services to residents of the area.
  • Work in cooperation with local agencies and professionals toward assisting area residents experiencing practical and emotional problems.
  • Develop a strong core of well-trained crisis workers.

  Philosophy
This program is called the HELPLINE because its purpose is to help callers meet their immediate needs and to talk about their pressing concerns. By communicating our acceptance, understanding and care to the callers, our hope is that they will feel comfortable and safe to be able to talk about their issues. We believe that this supportive attitude provides an atmosphere in which the callers can begin to examine, understand and cope with whatever concerns they are experiencing.
This confidential service is provided free of charge to all callers.

  Ethical Standards
All callers are treated with respect and dignity. The caller is assured that their information is treated with absolute confidence. If a call received could result in a crime, injury or death, the listener will access telephone security in order that an intervention may occur.

  Community Value

  • Provides a 24 hour/7day a week telephone crisis intervention and prevention service, emotional support and referral service to Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Vegreville and area.
  • Provides individual case advocacy when required.
  • Provides follow-up service if requested.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of information received except when potential for a breech in the criminal code, injury or death exists.

  24 Hour Help Line

  • We receive approximately 3,200 calls per year.
  • We spend approximately 1,020 hours per year, on the telephone assisting those in distress
